This week myself and Gavin were joined by the wonderful Matthew Evans of South Cheshire College the recent winner of the Taste Cheshire Young Chef Competition. Matthew was announced as the winner at the Chester Food and Drink festival, where the final was held and judged by no other than Gregg Wallace. Matthew got to this stage after getting through the first 2 heats held at South and West Cheshire College against some tough competition.
Matthew mentioned how nervous he was especially with Gregg asking him lots of questions, and 300 people watching but cooking definitely made it easier for him. His winning dish was Chicken 2 ways, stuffed with roasted peppers and spinach and roasted with crispy skin, pickled radish, roast potatoes and sweet potato puree. This is a lot of elements to cook in just 45 minutes especially with all the distractions but Matthew and his fellow Young Chef competitors all did very well.
Now me and Gavin have been doing this long enough to know that no one can visit us in the studio without bringing some tasty treats and Matthew brought us in a really feast to sample. On the menu was Sweet and Sour Pork, Tofu Thai Green Curry and Chicken curry, all which Matthew makes for the Academy-To -Go at South Cheshire College. This was Matt’s idea and so he runs a brigade of Young Chefs to make these dishes weekly to fill orders placed by the college students and the public. All the dishes were full of flavour and a real treat, so why not try them for yourself all available to order on the South Cheshire Website.
Matthew is an inspiration to us all, with his true passion for food and we wish him well in his future ventures in food, you never know he may be the next Jamie Oliver or Gordon Ramsey.
