Lakeland smash Baking Record Attempt #Blog

Over the weekend I was delighted to be involved in the Lakeland Longest Baking Marathon Official Guinness World Record Attempt. 3 lovely ladies form the Windermere store of Lakeland; Stella Wilson, Zoey Halliwell and Jane Nicholson baked continuously for 30 hours to beat and surpass the standing record. In this challenge over 8000 chocolate cupcakes were made and then were sold for a donation to raise money for the Royal British Legion.

The Attempt began at 11am on Friday, and all 3 bakers had to be baking non-stop until 5pm on Saturday Afternoon. The standing record to beat was 25 hours achieved by 6 individuals working for Nestle Toll House in Chicago USA back in January 2017. But Lakeland didn’t want to just match this attempt they wanted to beat this, so attempted 30 hours each.

The idea for this crazy attempt came from Windermere store manager Robin Moffat, as a way to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the ending of First World War hostilities. All of the Lakeland team got behind the idea and at times they even had company directors icing and boxing cupcakes. This was a massive challenge and people came out all through the night to support the bakers, with the store remaining open the whole time. The support from the community was greatly appreciated, not just the moral support for our three bakers but also from local companies donating services and equipment to make the challenge possible.

Part of the World Record attempt rules specify that the food created during the attempt must be accounted for and not wasted. Lakeland chose to decorate the cupcakes and sell them for a donation, all for the Royal British Legion a very worthy cause. In total over £2600 was collected from the sale of the cupcakes and the remainder have been distributed across the area to other charity’s, church groups and remembrance celebrations.

Stella Wilson one of the 3 bakers said “I have always enjoyed baking and when the opportunity came about to attempt a world record, I was happy to be involved for such an amazing cause, not many people at my age can say they are a record breaker! Thanks to Lakeland and the whole team behind us, we couldn’t have done it without you.”

The three bakers officially beat the previous record at Lunchtime on Saturday but continued until 5pm, when they were awarded with there certificates by Paulina Sapinska the official Guinness adjudicator, having checked all necessary paperwork and recorded footage.

Well done once again to the 3 record breaking bakers and the whole team at Lakeland who got behind them to raise lots of money and awareness for this fabulous cause, we can’t wait to see what you do next.
