Local Cheshire-based business, Three Wrens, sits amongst the best distilleries in the world as it announced today it will take home two prestigious and globally famous awards for its Apple Crumble and Bison Grass gins.
The Three Wrens Apple Crumble gin, which is distilled in Cholmondeley, has received a Golden Fork award at this year’s Guild of Fine Food Great Taste Awards following its achievement of 3 stars. The golden forks are given to, quote, the “best of the best” of the winners at the awards, and only 16 were given to companies, from over 14,000 entrants across 180 countries.
You may have seen from our social media that Team Taste Cheshire were in attendance, cheering Nick and Three Wrens on and were delighted to see so many industry leaders tasting and discussing their fabulous gin.
Great Taste is organised by the Guild of Fine Food and is the world’s largest, longest standing and most respected food accreditation scheme for artisan and speciality food producers. Judges commented that the Apple Crumble gin was “Truly astonishing. A fascinating, unique flavour.”
Although the exact recipe remains a secret, the flavour is made by macerating toasted oats in the base spirit before distilling with Juniper, Cheshire apples, nutmeg, cinnamon, and sweet orange peel. Each batch takes 3 days to make by hand.
In the same month, Three Wrens’ Bison Grass Gin scooped the UK’s Best Flavoured Gin award at the Great British Food Awards, making for an unprecedented double win for this small family-run distillery..
The Great British Food Awards, sponsored by Booths, award scores for taste and provenance of independently made British produce. The Bison Grass gin ranked first place in the flavoured gin category, from hundreds of entries from the UK’s top distilleries. Judges call it ‘A remarkable gin’ and it scored the maximum marks possible of 10/10 for taste and 5/5 for provenance
Three Wrens Bison Grass gin is a world first, and features the rare sweetgrass ‘Hierochloe Odorata’, traditionally only previously used in vodka production until last year. Master distiller Nick Wadeson, unable to buy the grass commercially, decided to grow it from seed at the distillery, and it can be found overflowing in their wooden planters in the summer months. The journey of the gin is 5 metres from garden to glass, and the company remains 100% self-sufficient and sustainable for this unique ingredient. The gin is Juniper rich and has notes of summer hay, cinnamon, lime peel and vanilla.
Owner and distiller, Nick Wadeson, commented on the successes: “This has been a life changing month for us. To have won two of the top prizes in food and drink, judged by the UK’s best food and drink experts, is astounding and I could not be more proud of my team and business.
“Both our Bison Grass and Apple Crumble gins are found nowhere else, and we have put a huge amount of effort into creating our range of gins, pushing the boundaries of innovation in the category along the way. We have seen a huge increase in orders and demand since the results were announced, and it is great to be so busy, we are looking forward to a record-breaking Christmas! We are currently working on another major release to be launched in Spring 2022, so watch this space!“
Three Wrens Gin operates an open-door policy at the distillery, allowing customers to drop in during the week, watch the award-winning gin production and sample the ranges for free. The company also offers a gin distilling experience where visitors are able to create their own unique gin under their expert guidance.
