Those of you who have followed Taste Cheshire for a while, first of all, thank you, and secondly, you may recognise the familiar face of Taste Cheshire founder Stephen Wundke. He is certainly a man about town, a known face and name in the local area as well as being a former Professional Cricketer, Golf Course Designer and Restaurant Owner among his many achievements. What you may not know, is that he is also now an author.

Yes, lockdown gave us all some time to pursue our passions, and Stephen has always been a storyteller.  He may not have been in our office for a while, but we do miss his 3pm “tea and talk time” which always included lively anecdotes of his varied and fascinating career. Surprisingly though, his first published novel is not about his own remarkable past but instead, Stephen has put pen to paper (or rather fingers to keyboard) to tell the truly extraordinary story of another Cheshire luminary; David Pickering.

It is called,

“The Luck you have is the Luck you Make”.

It is the story of David Pickering and the Pickering family from peasant farmers to landowners. It covers every aspect of British life, the ups and downs of farming, success at the major sporting events of the calendar, financial disaster and recovery.

From riding horses to training the Grand National Winner and owning the Kings Stand Winner at Royal Ascot, making a million and losing millions.

An extraordinary story of an ordinary family and one man in particular, who simply kept believing that anything was possible – and it was!

From the mid-1990s onwards, everything to do with Chester and Cheshire was affected by David Pickering. He was either on the board of the company you wanted to do business with, or his company supplied the company you wanted to do business with. The City Club of Chester, The Chester Business Club, Chester Race Company, Defra, The Northwest Development Agency, The Skills Partnership, The University of Chester, North West Accountants, Queens Park High School, The Chester Conservative Party, Chester FC, Dee Radio, Chester Zoo, The University of Chester, North West Farmers, they all had David at their heart or head in some way.

Stephen worked with David from 2007 – 2014 on Chester Festivals and Chester City management.

As Stephen himself says, “I don’t profess to know more about David, how he thinks and what he feels, than anyone else and I am certain many of his close friends would say, in their case, that isn’t very much, but I am confident this is an accurate and truthful portrayal of an extremely interesting life. A life that very few will have ever experienced.”

This is a fascinating tale of one individual who simply refused to accept that you couldn’t do more.
