Chester will celebrate the Chinese New Year of the Rabbit on Saturday, January 21 with a parade of traditional music, lions and dragon dancing, non combustible firecrackers and cultural characters.
The God of Prosperity, The Emperor of Heaven and The Happy Buddha will take to the city streets on Saturday morning in an event delivered by the Wah Lei Chinese Association supported by the Bank of America and the council.
The event begins at 11am on Bridge Street and will include a Tai Chi and weapons skills demonstration from the Ji Siu Tai Chi Chuan a group led by Maria Yuen and based in Handbridge. The Hung Gar Kung Fu Academy with Steve Ornelas will lead the colourful Lions and Dragon dance and parade through Bridge Street, Northgate Street, Town Hall Square and into the Storyhouse for 12pm. Tutors from Wah Lei Saturday Mandarin school based at the University of Chester and volunteers will deliver cultural workshops from 12.30pm to 2.30pm for the festival celebrations at Storyhouse.
