With grand black and white Tudor buildings aplenty, you could easily walk past The Townhouse. I nearly did, and I was looking for it! Couple that with Chester being a real gastro hotspot, you’ve got to offer something distinct to stand out from the crowd. How does all the prosecco you can handle for two hours sound!?
Ok, the prosecco is a real pull but it wasn’t the be all and end all, I mean the food wasn’t half bad either! The Townhouse itself was a bit bland – with a sad looking Christmas tree, the odd table and a comfy pair of sofas. I mention the sofas as there is usually an air of pretentiousness around afternoon tea, but it was nice to sit down snug and enjoy the feast.
The afternoon tea was laid out well – uniform sandwiches on the bottom and an array of beautifully presented cakes and bakes on top. I must mention that we were looked after by the staff and the chef coming over to explain the sandwich and cake selection was a nice touch.
I particularly enjoyed the cucumber and cream cheese sandwich. For some reason it’s a combination that is reserved for afternoon tea or lavish buffets, I say we should eat more of them! My only criticism was the brioche bun with red pepper hummus – it didn’t belong on there. Like the chef explained to us… the brioche would be better suited enveloping a beef patty! P.s. lose the pointless rocket.
The best part of the spread was the eclectic selection of cakes and bakes. There was something for everyone’s fancy; a gorgeous plum macaroon, pistachio and chocolate cake, fancy biscuit thing with gold leaf on top and of course a scone with cream and jam (would it be afternoon tea without one?) – all of which were fresh and moist!
If you’ve got some Christmas shopping to do and want somewhere comfy to get out of the cold, refuel and rest your feet, I couldn’t think of anywhere better.
Afternoon Tea at The Townhouse is £29.95pp for 2 hours unlimited prosecco and a selection of sandwiches and cakes.
