Celebrating a Local Gem: The Carden Arms Named in The Telegraph’s Top 500 UK Pubs
At Taste Cheshire, we are incredibly proud to work with businesses that embody the very best of our county’s food and drink scene. That’s why we were absolutely thrilled to learn that The Carden Arms in Tilston was recently named in The Telegraph’s prestigious list of the top 500 UK pubs.
The recognition is a testament to everything this special place stands for: a commitment to local produce, top-notch hospitality, and a deep-rooted respect for tradition. For years, The Carden Arms has been a valued member of our community, and this national accolade is truly well-deserved.
From the Farm to Your Fork
What makes The Carden Arms so unique is its authentic “farm to fork” ethos. It’s a genuine, old-fashioned village pub connected to an un-modernised mixed livestock farm, just as it used to be in a bygone era. Their menu showcases their own rare breed beef, lamb, and pork, raised just a mile away. It’s this direct connection that guarantees the freshness and quality of every dish, allowing you to taste the true flavours of the Cheshire countryside. This isn’t just a marketing slogan; it’s a way of life that honours the past in a fast-moving world.

A Pub Reborn
The story of The Carden Arms is one of passion and preservation. In 2016, the Grade II listed 18th-century coaching inn had fallen on tough times and was in a sorrowful state, closed and in desperate need of renovation. Local resident and farmer Didy stepped in and, with incredible vision and care, restored the old place to the charming pub it is today.
Standing proud at the head of the village of Tilston, the pub has been brought back to life, retaining all of its original character. It started its life as a true working man’s drinking hole, and over the years, it absorbed the next house along and even the stables at the end. The result is a delightful sprawl of nooks and crannies, each one telling a story of its own. Inside, you’ll find traditional decor, roaring fires, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere that makes you feel instantly at home.
This recognition from The Telegraph is more than just an award; it’s a celebration of a local hero. The Carden Arms isn’t just a place to grab a pint or a meal; it’s a living piece of Cheshire history, saved and cherished by a dedicated team.
We encourage you to visit and experience this remarkable pub for yourself, it truly is the absolute best in local hospitality and a perfect example of what makes our county so special.
