Popular Chester eatery Death By Tacos has confirmed its move from the market to the fast-growing foodie hub that is Watergate Street. The Mexican restaurant will be based at premises in the heart of the city centre, after being based at Chester Market since 2018.
Owner James Smith said that the team were excited to be making the move from the market later this year, with the opportunities it opened up to extend opening hours and capacity.
He took to social media to share the news, saying: “So your favourite Heavy Metal Taco joint is getting our very own bar right in the middle of Watergate Street. Expect more of the same but with MORE opening hours, MORE drinks, MORE seats & a BIGGER menu! Coming later this year.”
James said he planned to relocate to a former hair salon in Watergate Street in Chester before the market closes in September, with plans afoot to extend the food and drink menu once the new premises open.
The plans were given the go ahead by Cheshire West and Chester Council last year. James was inspired to set up the business following a trip to a trendy New York cocktail bar serving up tacos in an informal setting, going on to travel to Mexico several times and being inspired to bring a taste of Mexico to Chester.
He added: “We’ve been working on this for a while now and it’s nice to finally be able to tell people about it. We are dead excited. We made the decision not to move to the new market as we wanted a bit more control over what we could do.
“We will have a later licence to sell drinks. In the market we are only allowed to open late on a Friday and Saturday. We will be doing late nights through out the week in the new premises. We’ll also have a much bigger food and drink menu and a bigger capacity.”
The new restaurant would operate from 8am until midnight, Sunday to Thursday, and 8am until 1am on Friday and Saturday. It will join the likes of popular bars, Bar Lounge, Prohibition, Kuckoo, Palm and Assembly and buzzing restaurants Hamayuu, Upstairs at the Grill and Stile Napolitano on this thriving street, with the much-anticipated X by Harry Guy also set to open its doors at new boutique hotel Wildes Chester in September. The hotel is set to open next year.
