As we enter November, and the nights draw in, it seems less hasty and more timely to mention the ‘C’ word – Christmas is nearly upon us with only 8 weeks to go.
With the gin craze showing no sign of slowing down, and the versatility of the spirit seeming to be endless, little surprise then that Wirral-based Tappers distillery are set to re-release their ever-popular Figgy Pudding Gin for a fourth year running.
“The original release was only ever intended as a single-batch of 40 bottles back in 2016”, explains Dr Steve Tapril, founder and producer at Tappers. “It sold within 48-hours and I came under immense criticism from those who’d missed out”. He relented under pressure and re-released Figgy Pudding the following year. Since then it’s been an ever-popular festive addition to the extensive Tappers range.
Figgy Pudding Gin marries a staple of juniper and coriander with figs, apple, raisins, sultanas, orange and allspice for an authentic taste of Christmastime. Think rich, sweet and boozy with a hint of spice.
“Our whole ethos is about celebrating history, our natural heritage, and using authentic natural ingredients” adds Tapril.
Hence the name – Tapril takes inspiration from the Victorian era with his Tappers branding, apothecary-style bottles, botanical recipes, and humorous product names. Figgy Pudding is no different, named after the original Victorian dessert of the 19th Century popularised in the verses to the carol We Wish You a Merry Christmas.
One thing that hasn’t changed since Victorian times is the whirlwind of Christmas Day. Sipping on a Figgy Pudding G&T (adorned with fresh fig and cinnamon stick), with dinner cooked and turkey carved, will be sure to add some well-deserved festive cheer.
Figgy Pudding Gin is available to order online from Ocado (www.ocado.co.uk) and from Tappers Gin Distillery (www.tappersgin.com/shop).
