Last week we made a fabulous discovery. The sort that you dont do every week and when you do discover it you just want to tell people – we have and I am. What is it? Its a pop up restaurant at Bangor on Dee Racecourse, called Hafod. Now I hear you say, thats not in Cheshire and your right but Gaile and I like a little drive out and the setting at Bangor on Dee is second to none. Mountains in the background, foreground rolling fields and clean fresh, North Wales air. So Hafod has that going for it and that’s great but there is so much more to this than just a nice place to go. Its a real hidden gem.

You see Hafod is the Restaurant of The Cambrian College in Wrexham where all the hospitality students learn how to be great chefs, front house managers and generally how to excel in the Hospitality Industry and right now their normal kitchens in Wrexham are a building site. Step forward Bangor on Dee General Manager, Jeannie Chantler who says, “The Racecourse is only used for 15 days a year and with commercial kitchens in abundance – come and set up here while your building” – thats what neighbours do and fast forward to now – Restaurant Hafod is born. It is obviously only open when they aren’t racing and it has restricted hours but lunchtimes midweek is just perfect.

We went to the official opening and were blown away. They did some very special canapes for us which were tiny exmaples of the food they do on their menu. The hightst compliment I can pay is that within these dainty morsles I could taste every ingredient. It was fresh, vibrant and ooh so tasty. The restaurant setting is super, being as it is the Members Restaurant on Race Days and here’s the best bit, 3 Courses was just £10.50 and two courses £8.50. Take a look at a sample menu, you will see it has something for everyone.

This is a winner. Spread the word. If you want some super tasting food at a fraction of what you might normally pay then Hafod does it brilliantly. It’s a win for everyone, great tastes, students learning on the job and a fabulous setting. So trust me and take the time to visit this hidden gem. It takes just 20 minutes from Chester and you will feel great about your lunch date out. Hafod, most certainly is the only definite winner I have found at Bangor on Dee.
