Published every September, The Good Food Guide is created by Waitrose and Partners reviewed the best restaurants, pubs and cafés across the UK, and features up to 1,200 establishments which have met its high standards.
Each restaurant that is included in the list is ranked from one to 10, with one considered ‘capable cooking with simple food combinations and clear flavours, but some inconsistencies’ and 10 being ‘perfect dishes showing faultless technique at every service. An extremely rare accolade.’
The guide celebrates quality eateries and discoveries in local areas, compiled by combining reader feedback on restaurants up and down the country with anonymous inspections by a team of industry experts.
Included for another year, this fabulous restaurant and Taste Cheshire member, specialises in French bistro classics.
La Popote benefits from a verdant orangery extension which has added some light relief to this converted coach house with its sturdy old beams, exposed brickwork and ‘proper tablecloths’.
On the menu you’ll find dishes like ‘rich and warming’ French onion soup, confit duck with red onion marmalade, entrecôte Café de Paris, sea bass bordelaise, tarte tatin – plus a host of popular specials including seared scallops with Champagne beurre blanc.
Simpler and cheaper lunches also ‘punch above their weight’, perhaps a chunky game terrine with pear and plum chutney, long-cooked beef bourguignon, and a terrific croquette de poisson (aka a ‘big fishcake’) with frites.
