Ready, steady, bake Italia #Blog

A group of Year 3 pupils from The Firs School had the chance to be junior Pizzaiolo’s or Pizza Chefs for a morning at a local Italian restaurant.

The bake off Italia was held at Chester’s Pizza Express where the Pizzaiolo taught the children how to make a classic Margherita. The children were given a fresh ball of dough each which they learned how to knead and stretch into a pizza baking tin to form a traditional base. They added passata and arranged the mozzarella cheese, oregano and peppers to create the perfect Margherita pizza.

The visit organizer, year 3 teacher Emma Fearnley said; “Preparing a pizza provides a great opportunity to introduce our pupils to basic dough making, experience the feel of kneading dough and to learn the importance of using fresh produce. They were able to taste five different ingredients and answer a quiz for each one. We all returned to school with our own hand made pizza, which looked and tasted delicious. The children had grins from ear to ear. It was a brilliant morning enjoyed by everyone involved.”

The Firs Head teacher, Lucy Davies, added; “Food and healthy eating is incredibly important to us at The Firs. We encourage all the children to get involved with school food. For example, next week vegetarian students and staff are meeting with the Chef to discuss new menu options. We are constantly updating the menus and assessing the nutritional content of our snacks and lunches. Cheshire West recently carried out an unannounced spot check on kitchen hygiene and we again received the highest grading (five). Congratulations to Chef David from Holroyd Howe and his team.”
