Record number of canned wines in the 5th People’s Choice Wine Awards #News

If you need a wine which is perfect to drink at festivals and other outdoor occasions, with great eco credentials, look no further than the humble ‘tinny’.
This latest trend in alternative packaging for wines, shows no signs of stopping, particularly if the PCWA competition is anything to go by. Numbers of canned wine entries to the Awards increased by over 300% with Kiss of Wine’s suitably named ‘Chill’ winning The Great Outdoors sparkling/white/rosé category and a silver medal for its equivalent in the red category.

“We are all extremely proud to receive two medals within the Great Outdoors Category at this year’s People’s Choice Wine Awards” states founder Melissa Barshef. We focus on great wines from small winemakers, conveniently packaged in cans – the perfect offering this summer season for picnics, festivals and Jubilee events!” she added.

If you are wondering why to buy wine in a can, well around 70% of cans in the UK are recycled, they are in convenient single-use sizes and produce less wine wastage. In addition to the reduced carbon footprint, canned wine ships easier and they are lighter and non-breakable. If you are still unsure, then why not buy one and try it for yourself? The Kiss of Wine range can be found in Booths supermarkets and other independent retailers.

The 2022 ceremony and results

For those wine lovers who actually took part in the first round of judging of the 5th People’s Choice Wine Awards, the wait was over, to discover which producers, retailers and suppliers scooped medals in this hybrid trade and consumer event of the year – the first of its kind to be held outside of London.

Hosted by Britain’s Got Talent finalist, funny man Steve Royle and presented by The Wine Show’s Amelia Singer (Amazon Prime) and ex-BBC’s Food and Drink wine presenter, Kate Goodman, this event was fantastic fun and the place to be, whether you were up for a prize or not!

The People’s Choice Wine Awards was created in 2017 by Janet Harrison of Cracking Wine and Judy Kendrick, MD of Award-winning wine marketing consultancy JK Marketing. The People’s Choice Drinks Awards, now incorporating wines and spirits, is the only UK-based national drinks awards dedicated to and judged by enthusiastic consumers with help and support from industry professionals. They are designed to accurately reflect how the average drinker in the UK chooses and enjoys wines and spirits.
The award categories reflect the buying decisions of the average consumer and cover all types of occasions.

Submission numbers to the wine competition have grown 100% year on year and by 150% for spirits. The spirits competition (PCSA) was added in 2021 and now forms a separate competition and ceremony. Categories include gin, rum, whisky/whiskey, vodka, tequila, canned cocktails and mindful drinking (no/low alcohol). Unlike other competitions, the categories represent ‘drinking or buying moments’, rather than being generic and therefore are more meaningful to the average consumer.
Millie Milliken an award-winning journalist and ex editor of Imbibe, joined the core team in 2021 to help grow the spirits Awards and increase its profile across print and digital media.
