Support “Second Bite”: A Recipe for Real Change in Chester!

At Taste Cheshire, we’re passionate about local food, local businesses, and most importantly, our local community. That’s why we were incredibly excited to share the news about the recent Sunset Cafe initiative at The Townhouse, a fantastic collaboration with Soul Kitchen and Soul in a Bowl. Now, we’re here to talk about their inspiring next chapter – one that truly embodies the spirit of our city.

You might have seen our previous post highlighting the incredible work Soul in a Bowl does, offering vital cookery, numeracy, and team-working skills to those who have experienced homelessness. These “Cook & Eat” sessions are more than just cooking classes; they’re about building self-esteem, confidence, and paving a pathway to a brighter future, with participants even gaining Level 2 food hygiene certifications.

Now, imagine the impact of taking this phenomenal work to the next level.

Soul in a Bowl has an incredible opportunity to establish a permanent base at The Mount, Campbell Hall in Chester. This isn’t just about a new address; it’s about creating a stable, nurturing environment that will enable them to launch “Second Bite” – a groundbreaking social enterprise.

What does “Second Bite” mean for Chester?

It means turning those hard-earned skills into tangible employment opportunities. “Second Bite” aims to pay its employees – graduates from their “Cook & Eat” sessions – a living wage, offering them invaluable work experience and development that can lead directly to full-time employment. Their initial venture? Baking and selling delicious shortbread biscuit snack packs through our wonderful local independent retailers and cafes right here in Chester.

This initiative is a powerful virtuous circle. By supporting “Second Bite,” we’re directly helping individuals who have faced homelessness to get back on their feet and into meaningful employment. Their success in Stage Two will, in turn, provide the vital resources needed to continue and expand Stage One, bringing even more people through the transformative “Cook & Eat” sessions. It’s about empowering our community, one delicious biscuit and one life-changing opportunity at a time.
