With July being National Ice-cream month we thought of no one better to join myself and Gavin than Chrystal from the Ice Cream Farm in Tattenhall. The Ice Cream Farm is a family friendly tourist attraction bursting with all of the fun you need for a great day out in Cheshire. The ice-cream farm began its days nearly 31 years ago when the Fell family could not face wasting the excess milk the farm had produced so instead turned it in to ice-cream. As the business started to grow, people would visit the farm in order to purchase the delicious ice cream and with growing numbers, The Ice Cream Farm tourist attraction was born. Over the past few years the site has gone through a massive refurbishment to accommodate the growing interest it is now considered to contain the world’s largest purpose-built ice cream parlour and Europe’s largest sand and water play. So, whilst most are visiting for the ice cream there is plenty to do to make it into a whole family day out.
The farm now has 50 flavours all on offer in the parlour varying from traditional favourites like Chocolate and Mint Choc Chip to Rhubarb and Custard, Jelly Bear and Chocolate Ripple Cookie Dough. All 50 great flavours are made from 4 base ingredients milk, sugar, cream and a secret ingredient (there always has to be one) plus some additions dependant on the flavour.
With the redevelopment, there are now lots of new attractions on offer from ‘Honeycomb Canyon’, a sensational sand and water play area that allows children of all ages and abilities to play, engage and explore, to ‘Daisy’s Garden’ over-flowing with hidden delights to climb, crawl, balance and swing on, ‘Strawberry Falls’ miniature golf and ‘Silvercone’ racetrack.
I must admit whilst me and Gavin very much enjoyed trying the four flavours Chrystal brought in for us, it was very hard work picking our favourites as they were all so delicious. We got to try; Clotted Cream, Cherry Crumble, Choc Honey Crunch and Cinnamon. The Clotted Cream is a new flavour but it had a real traditional taste, it was so rich and creamy and would be perfect with some fresh fruit. Cherry Crumble, has such a powerful fruity flavour but not overpowering the fact you can taste every favour, including the cream. The Choc honey crunch, is another new flavour it is a mixture of their original chocolate ice cream with the honey comb chunks, adding a lovely sweetness to the palette and the honey left you with a lovely flavour that lasted. Finally, we tried the Cinnamon, which for lack of a better description it was like Christmas on a spoon. This flavour started off as a seasonal range and proved so popular it is now available all year round.
After all this time, the Ice cream farm is still family run and Tom and Margaret Fell are still seen around the farm doing the gardening and checking standards. So, get yourself down to the world biggest ice cream parlour and try some of the 50 flavours available (or visit a few times and try them all.)
Cheshire Farm Ice Cream has come a long way since 1986 when it was just a small parlour selling ice cream straight from the farm.
