Mobberley Ice cream Company, a popular local ice cream maker, is opening a new ice cream parlour and shop at Dairy Farm on Church Lane in Mobberley. With a rich history of hand-crafting small batch ice cream using the finest local ingredients and innovative flavours, Mobberley Ice cream Company has become a cherished destination for ice cream enthusiasts.
The new ice cream parlour will open on Friday 28th April and will be open daily. The choice of ice cream on offer will change daily depending on what’s fresh out of the kitchen that day. Customers can expect to see at least ten flavours to choose from with classic flavours like Double Dark Chocolate, Real Raspberry Ripple and Heavenly Vanilla Bean. Known for their experimental flavours, they will also be serving more adventurous flavours that showcase unique combinations such as Roasted Cherry and Goats Cheese, Big Idea Oatmeal Stout, Chamomile Chardonnay and even Ube (a purple sweet potato).
Hot and cold drinks will also be served in the parlour along with brownies, ginger biscuits, shortbread – the same ones used in their ice cream and sundaes. Take home tubs will be available for purchase, as well as proper ice cream milkshakes and sundaes. Local products used in their ice cream will also be available to buy in the shop to take home, such as honey from Bax Bees, sticky toffee puddings from Jo’s Sticky Toffee Pudding, fudge from The Yum Yum Tree Fudge Company and many others.
The opening of the new ice cream parlour and shop in Mobberley is a significant milestone for Mobberley Ice Cream Company as their first permanent base from which to sell ice cream. The location is also significant because it was at this farm in Mobberley that that ice cream business gained significant growth during lockdown – selling ice cream ‘to go’ at a series of pop-up events alongside the Flaming Gourmand’s BBQ. The parlour has been built in a converted barn on Dairy Farm on Church Lane in Mobberley, previously the home of Mobberley Brewhouse Tap & Shop.
Asked about why he chose Dairy Farm for his new ice cream parlour, Brian told us,
“When we heard that Mobberley Brewhouse were moving to somewhere bigger and the shop was going to be available, we jumped at the chance to take it on! It’s great to be opening our ice cream parlour here at this farm. The people of Mobberley have always been so supportive and we have lots of connections with this place. Those days in lockdown when people would come out to buy ice cream, even in the cold and pouring rain; that’s when we made a real connection with this place and the people who live nearby.”
The Mobberley Ice Cream Company have been selling ice cream since August 2020 when they launched a lockdown business at Greenoaks Farm in Mobberley. They quickly outgrew the premises and need a bigger space to make and store the ice cream. The ice cream business makes over thirty different flavours of hand-crafted ice cream that is currently sold across ten local stockists.
As a company that is deeply committed to supporting the local community, The Mobberley Ice cream Company works with many local producers to source the ingredients needed for their signature flavours including: milk from local dairies, honey from Bax Bees/Plumley Honey House, beer from MBH Brewery, Jo’s Sticky Treacle Toffee Pudding, Spirit of George gin from The Big Hill
Distillery, and coffee from local coffee producers Heart and Graft Coffee Roastery and also Kickback Coffee Roasters.
Owner of the Mobberley Ice Cream Company, Brian Brereton told us:
“When I first moved to the UK, I asked my wife Deborah to take me to all the good ice cream places. But I couldn’t find a single ice cream that tasted great. Most were made using powders and mixes, and just tasted the same as each other. I realised that if I wanted to have some proper all-natural ice cream like I’d tasted in America, I’d have to make it myself!”
At the heart of Mobberley Ice cream Company’s success is their commitment to making the hand-made ice cream using traditional methods. The process begins with the selection of the freshest local ingredients, which are cooked to make the ice cream base. Each base is unique and serves as the canvas upon which Mobberley Ice Cream Company adds their signature flavours resulting in ice cream that is bursting with taste and texture. No stabilisers or anything artificial is used in the ice cream and everything is made by hand. Co-owner Deborah Brereton talks about the process of making the flavours,
“When we create a new flavour, everything goes into a little test kitchen where we experiment. We keep making adjustments until the balance is just right. Then we have to scale it up for making it in bigger quantities. First we cook. Then we steep and roast. Then we cool. The hardest part is getting everything chilled before it goes in to be churned. I take all the freshly cooked ingredients and cool them in an ice bath. Then it’s over to Brian to work it into the batch freezer and turn it into rich, luxurious ice cream that is like no other around. We have two ice cream chefs on board who help us produce enough ice cream daily to try and satisfy demand.”
One of the unique aspects of Mobberley Ice Cream Company’s ice cream is the use of the renowned Emery Thompson batch freezer, imported from America. This state-of-the-art machine allows for the suspension of ingredients in ice cream, resulting in truly special frozen treats and even allows them to include alcohol in the recipes because of the control it provides over the freezing process. This was the same machine that companies like Ben & Jerry’s and Haagen-Dazs first launched their business with.
Brian concluded by saying,
“Ice cream is a happy product. We want everyone to come down to the parlour and be happy. We’d love this to be a place you’ll want to come with your family and friends, rain or shine, to put a smile on your face.”
The Mobberley Ice Cream Parlour and shop will open to the public on Friday 28th April 2023.
