Cheshire country pub has been named the best in the North West at the prestigious National Pub & Bar of the Year Awards in London.

The Swan, a family-run pub in the tiny village of Marbury cum Quoisley – population around 350 – took the North West Pub & Bar of the Year award.

The centuries-old pub has previously won Cheshire Pub of the Year at the Taste Cheshire Awards 2022, and its roast was named one of the top 40 Sunday lunches in the UK by Sawdays Guide in 2021. The pub is located on Wrenbury Road, 3 miles from Whitchurch and just under 7 miles from Nantwich.

In reaction to their win, the owners said: “We are over the moon to announce that we have been voted the North West pub & bar of the year at the @pubandbarmag awards in London.

“Huge thanks to our hardworking team and of course to all of our lovely loyal customers for your ongoing support.”

The pub is at least 250 years old. The earliest record of the venue comes from, 1767 when Thomas Briscall handed the keys over to John Broad Hurst, the Manchester Evening News reports.

The pub was restored and refurbished in 2018 by its current owner Jerry Brunning. Its food menu boasts the likes of Cornish turbot, spiced cauliflower steak, chicken schnitzel and spiced lamb koftas, while it serves a range of cask ales, craft beers, ports, sherries and dessert wines.

The Swan is one of 15 pubs and bars recognised at this year’s National Pub & Bar of the Year Awards. National Pub & Bar of the Year went to The Running Horses in Surrey, whilst Pub Chef of the Year was handed to Chris Fordham-Smith from The Barley Mow in Mayfair.

Pub Brand of the Year was given to The Beech House, whilst BrewDog Waterloo were handed the Bar Brand of the Year award. The Tollemache Arms in Northamptonshire was named the Heineken UK Sustainable Pub of the Year.
