The Wonderland of Oddfellows: A Magical Return to Form

Here at Taste Cheshire, we’ve always held a special place in our hearts for Oddfellows. When it first opened its doors in 2008, it was a true beacon for Chester’s hospitality scene, a place that was both unique and exciting. Over the years, however, it felt as though some of that initial sparkle had faded.

So, when we were invited for a sneak preview of their new concept, we were cautiously optimistic. What we found completely surpassed our expectations. Izzy and the new team have not only given Oddfellows new life and energy but have also created something truly unique. They’ve retained the quirky, special character that made the venue famous, all while adding new tricks to delight and surprise guests.

This magical revival is led by Isabel Marston, who returns to Oddfellows 16 years after being part of the original team. Now at the helm, she and her passionate local team are determined to place Oddfellows back at the very heart of Chester’s vibrant dining scene.

A Whimsical New Dining Adventure

At the centre of this transformation is Alice’s Parlour,

A whimsical dining space that feels like stepping through the looking glass. Designed by local talent Kelvin Lloyd-Roberts, the room is a fantastical world of upside-down lampshades, levitating books, and walls adorned with clocks and mirrors. It’s a playful yet elegant setting, perfect for a Mad Hatter’s Afternoon Tea or a romantic candlelit dinner.

Leading the kitchen is Head Chef Harry Elliott, a well-known figure in Chester’s culinary world. With his focus on fresh, locally sourced, and seasonal dishes, Harry and his ambitious team are bringing a new level of creativity and flair to the menu.

Our Culinary Journey Through Wonderland

We started our meal with the heritage tomato salad. It was a perfect blend of flavours and textures, with creamy whipped goat’s cheese and the delightful pop of confit beetroot. It was the ideal, light starter.

For our mains, the steak with chimichurri was cooked to a perfect medium-rare, and the chimichurri sauce was absolutely bursting with flavour. The homemade chips were the perfect accompaniment – fluffy in the middle and wonderfully crispy on the outside. We also tried the seabass, which was perfectly cooked and seasoned. The colourful gnocchi and delicious tomato ragu with capers finished the dish off beautifully.

Dessert was a creamy Basque cheesecake, a perfect ending to the meal. Although, we must admit we watched the chocolate pot and mango panna cotta go by with a little bit of envy!

The entire experience was made even better by the attentive and fun service from Ruby and Doug. Their passion for the new concept was clear, and it made us feel right at home.

As Isabel Marston says, “Our mission is to honour that legacy whilst bringing something fresh, exciting, and truly unique to the city. We want people to walk in and feel transported, but also right at home.”

Forget what you knew about Oddfellows before – prepare to be surprised and delighted.
