Wrexham Lager – going down a storm in Japan #News

It’s not just Typhoon, Hagibis that’s creating a storm at the Rugby World Cup in Japan, Wrexham’s very own lager is making big waves in and around Osaka as Wrexham Lager managing Director, Mark Roberts explains.

“About two months ago we received quite a substantial order from Osaka, Japan and they asked us if we would ship the consignment by sea, which we did. It took six weeks to get there and two days after it was landed the same people were on the phone asking us for more as the entire consignment had sold out in just two days. We explained the shipping delay and they asked us to send more, urgently by plane, which we did. Subsequently, despite them increasing the order each time, we have now sent our fourth order through and have had to step up our brewing regime to keep up with the demand both here and in Japan as the Rugby hits top gear.”

Roberts, still a keen local rugby player and recovering from a nasty knee injury is delighted that he and his company are doing their bit for Wales. “We are all huge Welsh rugby fans and I know what it’s like when you are away from home and you miss the things that make life special, so to think we are helping supporters of Wales makes us all feel proud. It would be nice to think the players get to enjoy a glass or two of Wrexham Lager after a game but we don’t know about that yet. All we know is that whatever we send they are drinking and with an amazing history like ours this is just one more incredible story.”

Wrexham lager has an incredibly rich history. Few know that it was the UK’s first lager and the world’s first export lager, regardless of what those chaps from Australia say! It was drunk on the Titanic and a label from a Wrexham Lager bottle was sent back from the battle of Khartoum. The integrity of the drink is without peer as Roberts and his team, when they took on the brewery, tracked down the original yeast culture to islands in the South Pacific and returned it back to its home. So the taste we all enjoy now is an authentic Welsh lager and it seems, at least in Japan, they cant get enough of it.
