It’s been a long summer and with the end of the school holidays within stumbling distance, I am, like all parents I assume, starting to run out of fun, different things to do with my small human. However, I did get extremely lucky this week to be invited to entertain my child in the most wholesome way, no ipads, minecraft or tv involved, just real life memory making as a family.
Sounds too good to be true? Well in a sense it is, because in order to do so, we had to get really lost. But stay with me…getting lost is all part of the fun.
Newly opened this weekend at Bolesworth Estate, Tattenhall is their Summer Maize Maze and it is a great family adventure that will kill a few hours, bank some steps, and create magical memories both in real life and on your Instagram.
It’s an easy drive from Chester to Bolesworth, less than half an hour and with plenty of free parking on site so getting to the maze is easy peasy. on arrival you are greeted by scarecrows and a trail of fun facts about bees as well as bees to ride and climb on! There is a large canopy covering a picnic area, an arts and crafts tent and we had a lot of fun creating massive bubbles with one of the “helpers”.
On a hot day (or really every day with kids) there is an ice cream van and we can thoroughly recommend the bacon sandwich from the Fordham Farm Grill food trailer, the bacon was top notch and we needed our strength for what was ahead!
The Aladdin themed maize maze is actually six acres, making it one of the largest in the northwest, and is open until Sunday 4th September with daily bookable slots starting at 9.30am. This is the venue’s first time of hosting a themed maze and flower picking, in association with Picking Patch, but they know what they are doing! Not only can your children let their imaginations run wild in the maize, they can also burn off some of their amazing energy following the twists and turns… we even found ourselves enjoying ending up in the odd dead end!
The Aladdin theme is fun and older children will notice the subtle changes in the story and the maze has an interactive element that older children will enjoy, scanning QR codes as you go, reading the jokes and answering the quiz questions. Younger children like mine will probably prefer the being the bossy leader element and pressing the buttons for the audio in each unique story telling scene throughout the maze.
One truly special touch is that as your child enters the maze they are given a ribbon and at the point in the maze where you meet the genie, they can write their own wish on the ribbon and hang it up with the others before journeying on through the wishing arch.
This was a lovely moment for us, at 4 years old, he needed a little help from Daddy but was so excited that his wish for chocolate cake might come true! (Guess what I’m baking this evening!). I think Daddy is also hoping his wish will come true.
After wandering through the maze and its assortment of fun filled interactive activities, Mummy, Daddy and the boss did celebrate finding the exit with some hot chips from the food trailer and sat enjoying the sunshine watching other visitors starting their journeys and others coming out of the sunflower picking patch.
I have to be honest, I really wanted to go sunflower picking. Seeing all these families coming out with armfuls or gorgeous yellow flowers to take home was making me very jealous. However, the small one has been recently obsessed with picking and bringing mummy flowers. I know, adorable right?! Well, I stupidly decided, this week, to try and teach him about the importance of leaving plants alone to grow and not picking them. Of course, this backfired on Mummy completely when I suggested getting our own sunflowers a mere 24 hours later.
The good news is, he has fully agreed to return to the maze later this week and to pick Sunflowers with me as it is my birthday so Mummy is allowed to do as she likes!
We can’t wait to go back to Bolesworth. This event is a clever, wholesome use of their fabulous property. It’s great fun for the kids of all sizes (daddy kids included!) and I will be looking out for other events in the future as this one was so well organised with helpful and lovely staff. These things make such a difference to families on days out. It’s not always easy.
The Maize Maze at Bolesworth is brilliant family fun and as you can see from the lead image on this blog, it gets TWO enthusiastic thumbs up.
Taste Cheshire was gifted this experience by the lovely team at Bolesworth but all opinions in this piece are our own. We stand by our recommendations. If you don’t believe us, or even if you do, we suggest you try it out for yourself
Get lost in our amazing maize maze and sunflower picking patch this summer holiday in the heart of Cheshire at Bolesworth.
