To me Sunday lunch is more than a tradition, and most people will tell you, I love to make things “traditions”; if it happens 3 times and I like it – then it becomes a tradition. And as traditions go Sunday Lunch falls just shy of Christmas in my mind, but with the advantage of you get it 51 times more a year. So, I was delighted when we were invited out to Mottram Hall to give the Sunday Lunch a try.
Mottram Hall is a fabulous place situated just outside of Wilmslow in the village of Mottram St. Andrew. The estate boasts a beautiful Grade II listed building and well as fabulously landscaped gardens, an 18-hole golf course and a wonderful spa, which is currently going through a major refurbishment. I was lucky enough to visit before it closed and it was what I like to refer to as ‘my happy place’ but having seen the plans for the development, I cannot wait to see what they do, I think it may become my ‘ecstatic place’. Just a few years ago the estate was taken over by De Vere Hotels, and since have refurbished the rooms and the spa is the next project to be completed, so keep your eyes peeled.
Anyway, back to the purpose of our visit – the food. We were here to give the Sunday lunch menu a try, served in the Carrington Grill restaurant, previously awarded AA Rosettes for culinary excellence, the menu celebrates British heritage, featuring the finest local produce. We happened to arrive on a busy day in the restaurant with lots of families enjoying their food and even a bridal shower in one of the private rooms, this venue is so beautiful it is the ideal location for any wedding or wedding related event.
Because Sunday is just never the same without a little precursor or sweet treat afterwards, the set menu for Sunday Lunch is 2 Courses for £21.95 or 3 courses for £26.95, so always scared of missing out on something fabulous and seeing the food going to the tables before we ordered, we settled in for 3 courses. The restaurant is a beautiful setting, with big comfy leather seats, with tasteful décor and a lovely atmosphere, this is way more than a hotel restaurant. The big windows make the room feel bright and everything is spaced out nicely, so you are never to close to other diners allowing everyone that bit of privacy.
We were greeted by several members of smiley staff, who were on hand throughout the meal, offering drinks and regularly checking everything was to our liking. We decided to begin with the Chefs Seasonal Soup with a crusty Bread roll, which was packed full of Cheshire Seasonal vegetables and was a great chunky soup, perfect for a hungry man, with the blustery weather outside. I opted for the Goats cheese Souffle, because I can never say no to dish with goats’ cheese in, this came alongside creamed spinach and a Parmesan sable. This was a beautifully presented and balanced dish, and a souffle always looks wonderful when cooked to perfection, I simply wish I could replicate the dish at home, but I don’t think that it could turn out like this.
After a short time to enjoy our starters, the mains arrived, we had both gone for the traditional roast dishes, myself the Slow Roasted Cheshire Beef and my Dining companion the Breast of Corn fed Chicken. Both dishes came with crispy perfectly cooked roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, confit carrots, broccolini (my favourite vegetable) and braised cabbage. The Beef was some of the best I have ever eaten 2 largely slices of medium rare roasted beef, in a beautiful red wine reduction, the meat melted in the mouth. And I received rave reviews of the corn-fed chicken, which was moist and packed full of flavour. For two simple dishes both were presented and seasoned perfectly and sometimes that is all you can ask – great food cooked well. They did the quality ingredients proud.
We may have been full by this point, but we couldn’t say no to pudding having seen the menu, we decided to try the Sticky Date Sponge Pudding, a lovely traditional end to a roast, served with vanilla ice cream and toffee sauce, it must have been good as my dining partner didn’t let it sit around for long!Note to self, If I wants a bite, I’ll have to be quicker next time!
I opted for the warm apple and cinnamon Crumble, with poached sultanas and crème Anglaise. Possibly one of the best puddings I can think of, the biscuit crumble with the soft apples and silky custard, what a perfect end to a lovely meal.
Taste Cheshire were gifted this experience by Mottram Hall but we stand by our comments, if you don’t believe us, or even if you do, we encourage you to check it out for yourself.
Sitting at the heart of Mottram Hall, our recently awarded two AA Rosette Carrington Grill features mouth-watering menus that focus on traditional English dishes with a twist.
